Grandma's Fried Green Tomatoes Recipe

Grandma's est fried green tomatoes, this recipe was shared by Sharon Horton, passed down from her grandmother. We're so glad that Grandma Horton's fried green tomato recipe was kept and shared by her granddaughter, Karen Horton Black.

Ingredients

  • 4 whole green tomatoes sliced
  • 3/4 cup cornmeal
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (sprinkled on tomatoes or add to flour mix)
  • 1 teaspoon salt or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon pepper or to taste, or omit
  • 2 eggs whisked
  • 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil

Instructions

  • Slice tomatoes
  • Sprinkle sugar lightly on tomato slices
  • Whisk egg/s in a bowl
  • Mix cornmeal and flour, 1-1 ratio In another bowl with salt & pepper (to taste)
  • Add oil to skillet and heat on medium heat until oil sizzles when sprinkled with drops of water
  • Dip tomatoes into whipped egg 
  • Drop egg-dipped tomato into flour-cornmeal mix and turn to coat meal
  • Heat oil in skillet
  • Fry meal-mix coated tomatoes in hot oiled skillet, turning as needed until golden brown on each side

Notes

Adjust quantities based on however much you’ll need to coat the number of tomatoes you’ll be frying.
We try to eat healthier as much as possible, so when we make this we adjust a few things that wouldn't have been around for Grandma Horton.
